Food for thought Session 1

Our class discussion confirms that many of you are unsure of your future career path. You all know I would love for that path to lead down the IT pathway. However if IT is not your area I will at least be satisfied if you can at least identify an area any area. With this in mind I want you to answer the following questions.

Remember to structure your responses and express yourself clearly. These questions are structured to probe your thought and hopefully inspire your future actions. How you benefit from the exercise depends on your input into the analysis of these questions. Do not shortchange yourself.

1. What is your idea of a career plan or career planning?

2. Research the definition of a career: Does that broaden your understanding or idea of a career? How does this understanding help you build your career?

3. IT as an industry is maturing. How does this affect your career planning?

4. Research Careers in the field of Information Technology. Why do positions in the highly-specialized areas of IT seem difficult to achieve?

5. Of the options listed that make IT a great career, which is most appealing to you?

6. What additional factors make IT a great career choice for you?

7. How important are personal satisfaction and interest to you when selecting IT as a career choice?

8. As you look at the factors for selecting a particular job, which is most important to you? Which is least important? Are there others you have or would consider important?

9. Why is it important to not be defined by the title you hold or your current role/position?

10. Discuss the importance of knowing the roles and responsibilities of various careers and why it is important to career development?

11. What is a working plan? It is said that a working plan makes tedious and unrewarding jobs bearable. What does this mean and how does it help you grow your career?

12. What additional factors make IT a great career choice for you?

13. What is outsourcing? How critical a factor is outsourcing for those pursuing an IT career?

14. Do you feel your answers reflect a positive self-assessment? If not, what can you do to change that?

15. Do you think this exercise has been beneficial to your career planning? Explain why or why not.

Case Study: General Motors turns to multisourcing

Read the case on Page 311 IT's about Business 10.5

10.3 General Motors turns to multisourcing and in a MS document answer the following questions.

1. Why is it so important that GM hold its vendors to common technology standards?
2. What functions do GM's IS employees perform? What skills or knowledge do they bring to the table? Why doesn't GM outsource these people as well?

3. Evaluate the site www.gm.com and highlight what you found most interesting as well as a suggestion for improving the site.

This is to be printed and submitted at the start of your next class.

Case Study: British Telecom Justifies its Applications

Read the case on Page 299 IT's about Business 10.1

British Telecom Justifies its applications and in a MS document answer the following questions.

1. Write a summary of the case.
2. Explain how British Telecom ended up with 4,300 information systems initiatives across the company.
3. Detail how the company went from 4,300 initiatives to 29.
4. Evaluate the site www.bt.com and discuss what you found most interesting.

Housekeeping

I must take some time out to address some disturbing news.

I was informed by the Dean that she received a report from the IT Director claiming that students are eating in the computer lab and apparently are being encouraged/allowed to do so by the teachers."

Needless to say I am astonished at this allegation and out rightly state that in my case, this is a false statement. Never have I knowingly allowed any student in my class or otherwise to eat in the lab during my presence. Of course I can only speak for myself and for the times I am present in the lab.

You all can attest to the fact that I would not tolerate nor condone such behavior.

Obviously my actions are not enough to stamp out this unwanted behavior altogether.

Hence I seek your support in the following..

1. Continue to adhere to our policies in relation our lab rules.
Especially when in another teachers class or if no classes are in session and you are in the computer lab.

2. If you are in the presence of someone who is eating in the lab or doing anything that is contrary to my expectations and requirements, please be mature and responsible and let them know that this is unacceptable behavior.

I will be posting a reminder/copy of all the lab rules so that if you are ever put in a position and do not know how to address the matter, simply refer to my blog, bring up the list of rules and point it out to the offender. It may be easier that way.

I will also be posting a copy of the rules on the bulletin board in the lab and around campus to make everyone aware of the expectations when in the lab and that it is a commitment they agreed to when seeking lab access.

Please let us work together to ensure that we get the most out of our equipment and time spent in the computer lab.
